February Newsletter

 Birthdays:  15-Martha Easter, 27-Ann Magaha.  Birthday game:  February 5 at 2 p.m.

The big news of the month is the start of Easybridge on Wednesday mornings from 9 to 11.  The first four sessions are free.  After that the same game charge as any other game applies, and there will be masterpoints awarded..  Help us get out the word about this new chance to play and learn.

Our charities for February are West Volusia Hospice on the first and second of the month, and Journey’s End on the 25th and 27th.  Most of us are aware of the fine service local Hospice has been to club members and their loved ones.  You may not know about Journey’s End, a no-kill shelter for all sorts of animals, from dogs and cats to horses. These two institutions share the goal of dignity without pain as the end of life nears.  As usual, all donations are voluntary, and we hope you will be generous.

We will  support ACBL’s Junior Fund on 2/10($6 members, $8 non-members).  The extra dollars will go to programs to interest school and college students in the game and to support Junior bridge player activities and participation at tournaments.

The week of February 13-19 is Silver Point time in the club—no extra charge for members, but non-members $8.  Sign up if you want to participate in a team game on the 19th.  We must have five tables to hold this event.

There will also be a 0-299 team on the 29th.

One of our players has issued a challenge to the club.  Let’s get the automatic scorers for DeLand.  He has promised to match up to $1500 of the $3300 cost.  The scorers speed up the production of results and eliminate most scoring errors.  When we tried them several years ago, there were too many “bugs,” and we didn’t keep them.  That’s not true with the new ones now available.  Give your donation to any game director.  Any amount is welcome!

We’ll have a mentor session from 9:30 to 11:30 on the 16th.  Club Championships have been scheduled for the 4th and the 28th.

Our parking lot is very full this time of year.  Please park considerately—not in the traffic lane.  It’s also considerate of others to turn off your cell phones.

Got a cold?  Keep it at home, please.
